Dutch Killer Sentenced

Volkert van der Graaf, who confessed to killing Dutch anti-immigration politician Pim Fortuyn, was sentenced to 18 years in prison Tuesday. In deciding not to sentence van der Graaf to life in prison, judges said the chance of repetition was small and the defendant deserved a chance to be rehabilitated. There is no death penalty in the Netherlands. Van der Graaf, 33, testified that he shot Fortuyn on May 6, 2002, just nine days before elections in which Fortuyn was running for prime minister, to stop him from gaining power and carrying out his anti-immigration agenda. Van der Graaf likely will serve about two-thirds of the sentence, or about 12 years.
