U.S. adventurer Phil Buck is making progress in his attempt to be the first to cross the Pacific Ocean in a primitive reed boat. Buck and his eight-man crew set sail from Chile on March 17 in the huge crescent-shaped craft, made using a pre-Inca design. They've made it to within 900 miles of Easter Island, where they'll stop for supplies and repairs. Buck hopes to show that pre-Incan cultures could have colonized Easter Island and other parts of Polynesia. However, time is working against the crew. The reed boat will gradually become waterlogged and eventually sink. Buck hopes to make up some lost time and complete the trip in under seven months.
