Subject: Do Privacy Fears Allow Terrorism?
"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
-Benjamin Franklin ("Do Privacy Fears Allow Terrorism?," April 3, 2003)
There is a reason wiretapping restrictions were put in place -- because the government abused its power. Everyone I've spoken too has said they would rather be (arguably) less secure than have the government sniffing through their private data.
You also have to remember that these terrorists will do everything they can to get to their target. I can easily envision the equivalent of data laundering to get around these systems. Where does this leave everyday citizens who are still being snooped on?
Knowledge is power and the amount of power this would give the government is scary.
