People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals offered $15,000 worth of nonmeat patties to Hamburg, New York, if city officials would change the name of the town to Veggieburg. "The town's name conjures up visions of unhealthy patties of ground-up dead cows," said PETA spokesman Joe Haptas. "Our offer is serious as a heart attack," Haptas added. Hamburg officials immediately declined. "We're proud of our name and proud of our heritage," commented a city supervisor. The Buffalo suburb claims to be the birthplace of the hamburger and celebrates the American culinary staple at the annual Burgerfest.
