War Within a War

The simmering tensions between Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his battlefield commanders in Iraq have become openly hostile following a story in The New York Times in which officers accused their chief of failing to commit a sufficient number of troops to the effort. "He wanted to fight this war on the cheap," said one unnamed colonel. "He got what he wanted." The most recent complaints tally with remarks made last week by 5th Corps commander, Lt. Gen. William Wallace, who said current American strategy would probably result in a longer war than anticipated.
