Although itching to support the idea, President Bush said Thursday that it's too early to seriously consider a constitutional ban on gay marriage. "I don't know if it's necessary yet," Bush said. "Let's let the lawyers look at the full ramifications of the recent Supreme Court hearing. What I do support is a notion that marriage is between a man and a woman." The Republican right, on which Bush depends heavily for a lot of his firepower, stepped up the rhetoric for the ban following last week's Supreme Court decision that struck down a Texas law making homosexual relations a crime.
