As in nature, the most effective protection against a catastrophic virus is diversity ("Geeks Grapple With Virus Invasion," Aug. 21, 2003).
Even if a virus affects all machines of one type, it is unlikely to affect all machines of all types. The more diversity, the less likely a virus attack is to have a major societal impact. Microsoft's monopoly makes viruses that much more dangerous.

A 200-year sentence? I'd suggest that somebody involved in "hatching" this bill is a brick short of a load ("Patriot Act II Resurrected?," Aug. 21, 2003).
But maybe they're just lazy and picked the first round number that came to their heads. With this kind of thinking, it's not hard to see why the power grid failed.

I can only guess that Ashcroft must be a direct descendent of the court of King George and that his intention is to bring the Constitution in line with the era when the common man had no real need for rights ("Patriot Act II Resurrected?," Aug. 21, 2003).
Ashcroft simply is trying to right the grave error that our forefathers made. Long live the Georges.

The audacity of Hatch and the Justice Department regarding their exploitation of 9/11 for their shared Stalinistic vision of America is something worth screaming bloody murder about ("Patriot Act II Resurrected?," Aug. 21, 2003).
The fact that so few are screaming or even concerned about their intentions suggests most Americans know little about why this nation was formed and why its founders were more revolutionary than anyone before them. So it goes.
