Bollywood Movie Critic At Large

I just saw this film in theatrical release in Austin

*Main Hoon Na ("I'm Here Now') is the latest

release out of the Karan Johar stable. It was

directed by his choreographer, a woman

named Farah Khan, who has instantly become

the hottest female director in mainstream Bollywood.

This flick is going to make a mint.

"Unabashed entertainment, 1970s style

"army, politics, india, pakistan, assassination, saviour, extramarital affair, good father, bad father, paratha-feeding mother, ideal son, stepson, distant daughter, tomboy, funny friends, oddball teachers, sexy teachers, countless clichÈs, makeovers, love, couples, school, college, superman, classrooms, romance, colours, prom nights, violins, saxophones, dream songs, midriffs, cleavage, dream girls, deewar, sholay, mard, gabbar, rickshaws named dhanno, r d burman, grease, kuch kuch hota hai, action, jerry bruckheimer, matrix, mission, impossible, electric guitar, blue-eyed villain, terrorist, bullets, guns, bombs, helicopter, ram, laxman, ramayan, rona dhona, hasna khelna, grease, happy ending"

*I'll never forget the scene where terrorists are

blowing out the brains of the police escorts

at the very same moment that the college kids

are engaged in a giant "Grease" style campus

dancing scene. This goes way beyond the

usual Bollywood "masala flick" surreal juxtaposition –

there is a kind of arch, postmodernist thing

going on here. This film is worth every paisa

just for the closing credits.

People who believe that Bollywood is still

"regional cinema" need to check out the

background of this budding actress.
