I've completely changed my mind about the iTunes DRM-stripping software PlayFair, now called Hymn. Just yesterday I thought Hymn was mostly unnecessary given Apple's relatively liberal copyright restrictions.
But as Ian Betteridge points out, Apple's not worried about piracy. The iTunes FairPlay DRM has another purpose: it locks songs to the iPod.
"Hymn/PlayFair removes that link between iPod and iTMS, making it possible to buy music on the store while using it on a competing player," Betteridge writes. "That lack of tie-in is what makes Hymn a threat to Apple."
