Here's the latest on the CherryOS:
As mentioned previously, the developer, Arben Kryeziu, allowed me to download a test copy of the software from a site that has subsequently been removed. He warned me there were several bugs, and promised to send newer versions as they became available. I haven't received any.
I've been trying for the last three days to get the system up and running on various machines -- to no avail.
I did manage to get a Panther installer to begin the installation process, but as I explained, it refused to proceed with first detecting a previous OS X installation. A colleague tried a full install of Panther on three different PCs, but again, none worked.
The CherryOS website is no longer available. According to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin the site will remain down until the software is ready to be sold. In the interview, Kryeziu denies CherryOS is based on PearPC.
I'm working on a follow-up story examining some of these issues, and others, to be posted on the Wired News site on Monday.
