New Yorker Casts Its Vote

For the first time in its 80 years, the venerable magazine has endorsed a presidential candidate. Guess who it is? "Kerry offers a clear, corrective alternative to Bush's curious blend of smugness, radicalism and demagoguery," wrote the magazine's editors. The editorial that praised Democratic Sen. John Kerry lambasted the Bush administration's record on issues like the economy, health care, the environment, the war in Iraq and the fight against terrorism. "Its record has been one of failure, arrogance, and -- strikingly for a team that prided itself on crisp professionalism -- incompetence." Said New Yorker Editor David Remnick on his decision to break with tradition and endorse a candidate, "The magazine's not a museum; it's a living thing that evolves."
