The Guggenheim of Lowbrow Art

I've now been in Los Angeles almost a week.

I know San Francisco pretty well, but Los Angeles

scarcely at all.

This place has got about as much to do

with San Francisco as Rio de Janeiro does.

My primary cultural discovery to date: the

legendary LA LUZ DE JESUS gallery. Yeah,

I've always known "la Luz" was in Los Angeles,

but now that I've Seen the Luz on the

Road to Damascus, I really grok it

about the, like, sensibilite'.

I was minding my own business over

the tiki heads, hot-rod art and true-crime books

when some Angeleno earnestly asked me

if I worked there. I just debarked from the turnip truck,

and this guy thinks that I'm a STAFFER at

Luz de Jesus?! What a compliment!

"WORK here?!" I expostulated. "I want

to LIVE here!"
