It's a beautiful thing. See attached photo.
The display card is a Radeon 7000 which retails for about $40.
I'm driving the laptop from the desktop's keyboard and mouse using Synergy, a handy open source application.

If I wanted to use the laptop display as a 3rd monitor for the desktop, there's a $35 commercial app that does it. I tried the demo but didn't find myself using it often.
Haven't found an open source equivalent yet.

There's another $40 commerical app that improves the behavior of the Windows GUI over multiple monitors. Haven't tried it yet.
