The company that turned low-carb eating into a national diet craze, Atkins Nutritionals, filed for bankruptcy Sunday. The diet eliminates carbohydrates such as bread and pasta in order to shed weight, and it quickly became one of the most popular in U.S. history, spawning numerous derivatives and a cottage industry of low-carb regimens. In spite of allowing fatty foods and downplaying fruit and vegetables, its popularity has waned. The company says the bankruptcy won't hurt day-to-day operations -- guess it's just trimming the fat.
