Ford and Microsoft have created a customized F-250 truck equipped with a computer that enables contractors to do office work on the go. The truck includes a Stargate Mobile computer running Windows XP, along with high-speed wireless, GPS system, camera and printer.

The system, to be introduced at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show, enables contractors to prepare bids and bills using a touch screen computer constructed to survive the occasional bounce or scrape from outdoor use. The removable computer is a fully-functioning laptop and includes Microsoft's Office and Outlook.

No truth to the rumor that the software automatically factors in the 30 percent of "unexpected" cost overruns, but hopefully there will be reminders that nag contractors to show up and finish jobs before starting new ones.
