The Wind Beast of Theo Jansen

I've heard of Theo Jansen for years, but it was worth coming

a long way to see one of his creations in action.

Strandbeest, the Jansen site

That would be Theo there in the shirt, accompanied by

some Dutch beast-wranglers.

It's like a Mark Pauline creation, but from a gentle

planet of winds.

They're 100 percent handicrafted, but they bear a few

telltale marks of their computer-generated ancestry.

pneumatic wind-power!

That's right: crankshafts.

Pistons.

Pneumatic, uh, ganglia.
