A Coos Bay father and son learned the hard way that, in Oregon, not all forms of love are legal. Two years ago, Rocky and Jonathan Perkett rescued a wailing black bear cub from a logging site. They took the critter home, fed her pizza and Dr Pepper, and tucked her into Jonathan Perkett's bed at night. "We lived with her. We loved her. We treated her like a daughter," said Rocky Perkett, 54. Trouble is, holding a bear without permits in an unlicensed facility violates state laws designed to keep wild animals wild. And last week, police raided the Perketts' home and seized the bear. Now they plan to hire an attorney and hope to bring their beloved bear back home. "We're hicks. We're mountain men," explained Rocky Perkett. "The only thing we did wrong was love one another."
