La coscienza degli oggetti che ci circondano e che sempre piø a buon mercato e sempre piø rapidamente ci vengono proposti, ø uno dei cardini intorno al quale gira un possibile diverso ruolo dei 'consumatori' nei sistemi occidentali. Bruce Sterling, che da tempo porta avanti la sua mailing list di attivismo ambientale e design cosciente (Viridian), ci invita qui a scoprire analiticamente le dinamiche di produzione degli oggetti stessi, e a riconsiderarli come nostra infrastruttura, spogliandoli, allo stesso tempo,
di ogni feticismo iconico. Questo atteggiamento permette di svelare molti processi e necessita di armarsi di prospettive storiche e futuribili, ma riassume in sø molte delle dinamiche trasformative dei nostri tempi, lasciando un irresistibile alone di fascino. In questo va incluso il fondamentale concetto del 'costo di opportunitø', ossia di come la scelta spesso inconsapevole di dedicare del tempo a qualcosa abbia un altissimo costo di opportunitø perse.
Il testo fruisce non solo dello stile dell'autore fatto di un ritmo fluente di discorsivitø interrotta da lampi ma si integra perfettamente con la grafica di Lorraine Wild con l'uso di font diversi per le parole chiave, di evidenziazioni del testo come se fosse stato usato un apposito pennarello, di linee che ricollegano termini identici nelle pagine aperte, e di minuscoli efficienti 'titoletti' riassuntivi per *ogni* pagina di testo. Questo, fra l'altro, ø l'ultimo titolo della Mediaworks Pamphlets, collana curata da Peter Lunenfeld, e come ogni titolo di questa serie, ø inoltre accompagnato da un 'webtake', ossia da un applet fruibile online che va a completare concettualmente la sperimentazione sul design e sull'interazione fra stampa e contenuti elettronici, realizzato stavolta dal team tedesco Schoenerwissen (giø autori di txtkit e Minitasking).
