The Samajwadi Party leader, who held a press conference here on Friday afternoon, refused to name the industrialist, but said that he had informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about his identity. "He has loads of money, and has developed an expertise in such activities. He dished out Rs 80 lakh to the detective agency to have my telephones, as also those of several opposition leaders, tapped for just one month," Mr Amar Singh told newspersons.
He identified the journalist-turned-politician as Rajya Sabha member Rajiv Shukla.
The Samajwadi Party leader, who obviously has decided to go all out in his effort to whip up political, as well as popular, support on the subject, once against repeated his charge that it was Congress president Sonia Gandhi who was the mastermind behind the entire operation.
"AICC general secretary Ambika Soni, former aide to the Congress president, Mr Pulok Chatterjee, principal secretary (home) in Delhi government, Mr R Narayanswami and the journalist-turned-politician executed her orders," Mr Amar Singh alleged.
Fears that the use of indecent and obscene language by a section of the Congress to embarrass the Samajwadi Party leader would end up vitiating the political discourse came true, when Mr Singh paid back in the same coin. He singled out Ms Soni and railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, labelled as chara-bhakshi (fodder-eater), for special treatment, while endorsing their demand that the contents of the tapes be made public.
"Is Ambika Soni my wife that she should raise questions about my morality?" he asked, adding, "Today, Ms Soni is talking about my Majnu-culture. I can give her lessons on Laila-culture." Mr Amar Singh pointed out that Bhupendra Singh, the detective agency's owner who had been arrested by the Delhi Police, was merely a front for the operation's kingpin, Ms Naveen Dahiya, aka Bobby, a resident of Sector-12, Rohini.
"They have in their custody several mobile phones, through which they are tapping the telephones of prominent opposition leaders, all at the behest of Ms Gandhi," he said.
