UPS is repackaging its fleet of delivery trucks to be more eco-friendly. The delivery service company purchased 50 hybrid trucks that use longer lasting lithium-ion batteries for its fleet.

The addition of the hybrids will bring UPS' alternative fuel fleet to 1,500, including natural gas, hydrogen and electric vehicles. UPS expects the trucks to save 44,000 gallons of fuel during the year.

While today's hybrid vehicles are appropriate for stop and start traffic, delivery services are even more suitable for plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles. The vehicles are stored in a central location every night making it easy to recharge the batteries, and running on batteries in urban areas will help reduce pollution where it is most advantageous.
