Chargesheet filed in Amar Singh phone tapping case
Posted on 15 Feb 2006
New Delhi: Delhi Police Wednesday filed a chargesheet against four people arrested in connection with the tapping of Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh's phone.
"We have completed investigations in the case and filed the chargesheet Wednesday," said Ajay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police, Special Cell.
The case was handed over to the Special Cell in December last year after Amar Singh accused Ranjit Narayan, the joint commissioner of police (crime branch), of ordering the wiretapping of his phones.
In the one-and-a-half-month long investigation, police arrested private detectives Vijay Dhawan, Bhupendra Kumar, Anurag Singh and Reliance Infocomm employee Kuldeep.
Investigations revealed that the four men had forged a letter of Ranjit Narayan and R. Narayan Swamy, principal secretary (home), Delhi, and used it to tap the phone for nearly three months.
Bhupendra Kumar and Anurag Singh were arrested Dec 31 and Jan 6 respectively while Kuldeep, the third person, was arrested Jan 3.
Police said the four accused had hatched the plan at a meeting called by the Association of Private Detectives of India in September and decided to wiretap the phone calls of Amar Singh to earn quick money.
Police investigations also revealed that the four men had made CDs of the phone conversation of Amar Singh and were trying to find a buyer to sell the tapes of his conversations when the controversy broke out and police nabbed them.
The controversy took an ugly turn when Amar Singh accused Congress chief Sonia Gandhi of instigating the wiretap through private parties and also approached the Supreme Court seeking a judicial probe.
