Re: A Word to the Wise on WiMax

I think there is a factual error in this story. I believe it would be more correct to say that Marty is the inventor of the mobile phone, rather than saying he is the inventor of the cell phone. The mobile phone, it is true, is old. The cellular phone, a different creature, is a marriage of the old marine phone service (ship to shore) and cellular two-way radio technologies, neither of which is his invention. And FYI, cellular two-way radio is the creation of amateur radio operators worldwide, using a system they call "voter controller," where multiple radio cells listen for and use the strongest signal from the mobile unit. And the grandfather of the internet is amateur radio's Packet Radio worldwide system.

I wish that the current Mac exploit were trivial enough to ignore, but to be honest it's a really nasty one that could easily catch anybody off guard, neophytes and seasoned users alike. By disguising a terminal script as another type of file (it works fine masquerading as an .mp3 or .doc, as well as a .jpg), it makes all downloads suspect for inspection.
We've done testing here at The University of the Arts, (where we're 85 percent Mac) and we've successfully and repeatedly deleted all files in test user accounts (both Standard and Admin permissions) using a simple five character command that any 7-year old could write, disguised as a range of files - .jpg, .mp3, etc.
We have come up with a set of temporary solutions and usage guidelines for our community, but the fact of the matter is that if people are not educated about the issue, they can't be expected to know how to deal with it. Intuition and a good BS detector are not always enough. Good and factual communication go a long way in this respect.
Granted, while the Mac OS does not endure nearly the volume of abuse that Windows does, when something really nasty is found, it can't be written off cavalierly either by the Cult of Mac (of which I am a long-standing member). This is true for both end-users and Apple, and the test will be to see how quickly a fix is developed for this critical vulnerability. If Apple is ever to increase its market share, issues like this will need to addressed with a fleet foot.

My regards to Ms. Granick for a very fair and even handed discussion of the use of copyright law to silence dissenting views. Kudos!

Please keep mocking paraplegic kittens. I believe they are an active and divisive force in politics today. Yesterday, I kicked a black one and today I'm in jail. Only you can help deliver me from this politically correct evil.
