While this article was informative and well written, it was also a classic example of the anthropocentric viewpoint that is perverting the planet (gee, let's ignore the effects of human population on ecosystems -- all that matters is how we can modify the planet in order to feed the humans). Like I said, it's a useful article, but I'm just so sick of tame journalism that doesn't ask the right questions.

"Marty Cooper, who invented the cell phone three decades ago." That is not strictly right.
Automatic mobile phones had already been used in Sweden for about 15 years. (Since about 1950.) But those were mounted in cars and were not something you carried around, not even like a portable computer of today.
Marty Cooper is more correctly described as inventor of the mobile cell phone.
