If 2007 Toyota XJ Cruiser owners claim they are hearing voices from above, they are not experiencing a divine communication. The headliner of the retro-style SUV uses a flat speaker system to send good vibrations from overhead.

Toyota incorporated SurfaceSound speakers from NXT, a flat panel system that can generate stereo sound from a single speaker. The technology distributes the sound generation across the entire surface area, and can be molded into a variety of shapes and size, according to NXT.

The XJ Cruiser enables you to shut off the sound in the cargo area to prevent the cacophony from confounding canines. Toyota is also using NXT technology in its Estima minivan.
