When it comes to requiring vehicles to implement new clean air regulations, as California goes, so goes the nation. Since it is by far the largest car market in the country, changes made to sell vehicles in the Golden State are often adopted country wide.

While some have complained about the state's ability to strong arm the auto market, a congressionally-mandated commission says that California is justified in creating laws that far exceed federal mandates. The report says that pollution problems in some areas of the state make it appropriate to implement strict emissions guidelines.

California has by far the most rigorous emissions standards, and many states copycat its provisions. So like it or lump it, if you live in North Dakota, when California passes a new law requiring new emissions equipment, you may have to pay a few bucks more for your car.
