European allies are banding together to free themselves from the grip of petroleum. DaimlerChrysler, Renault, Royal Dutch Shell, Sasol Chevron and the Volkswagen group have formed the Alliance for Synthetic Fuels in Europe.

The group promotes the development of synfuels from biomass, coal and natural gas. The objective of coordinating their efforts is the same as on this side of the pond - energy independence, cleaner air etc.

It's good to see that two major petroleum companies (unlike ExxonMobil) are interested in diversifying their income as the clock runs down on petroleum.
