Vacuum tubes and switches galore: Douglas Repetto takes a look at the RCA Mark II synthesizer tucked away in an office at the Columbia Computer Music Center. The synthesizer was conceived in the late 1940s or early 1950s as a replacement for a live orchestra, but, when that didn't happen, was donated to the now-defunct Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center.
