Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, have identified that the hippocampus plays an important role in "emotional eating." The finding suggests that the drive for food and drugs are controlled by similar brain circuits
The researchers used an "Implantable Gastric Stimulator," which is kind of like a pacemaker for the stomach -- it can artificially make you feel full -- to come to their conclusion. They studied patients over two years, and found that the study subjects were able to avoid emotional eating more often when the device was on than when it was off.
