As we reported earlier this month, Sling Media has announced plans to bring the software player for its popular Slingbox personal media server to the Mac. Well, the wait is almost over, folks – SlingPlayer for the Mac has been released as a beta.

There's a link to download the public beta on Sling's site right now. It looks like the build is a universal binary, but the company has only built it to run on OS X 10.4. Support for 10.3 is listed as "coming soon." Apparently, there is no PAL support, even though the Windows and mobile players support PAL video streams. Also, you'll need at least a gig of RAM (which is no big surprise for streaming video) so users with less than that should know to set their expectations a little lower.

As soon as we can locate a Slingbox to test out the player, we'll offer a review. For now, check out the screenshots over at Engadget. Hopefully we'll get a final release before baseball season starts up again...
