If there's a bird flu epidemic, Tamiflu will become quite popular. But what if the birds themselves are immune to it?
Here's a scary scenario presented by a new British study, as reported in New Scientist:
Humans take Tamiflu, just like they do now. It goes through their bodies and ends up in the sewer system and, ultimately, lakes and rivers. Birds drink the Tamiflu-carrying water and their bodies become immune to the drug.
And then what happens? The birds infect us with a drug-resistant strain, we take Tamiflu, and it doesn't work.
