The New York Times have handed out their awards for the best illustrated children's books of 2006. I think I'm particularly partial of the pop-up illustrations of Maurice Sendak's Mommy?, in which a swollen-tongued tyke keeps on mistaking godless abominations like Dracula and the Frankenstein monster as his mother. Above: Frankenstein so incensed at being mistaken for a woman that he prepares to squash the kid like a snail underneath his hob-nailed boot.
