WiivdThis is a bit of an odd announcement. Not even a week before Wii hits stores, Nintendo says that a version of the console that features DVD movie playback will launch in late 2007. Says GameDaily:

We find it curious that Nintendo is sort of splitting the market by offering one model without DVD playback and then later one with DVD
functionality enabled, but [Nintendo PR manager Matt] Atwood asserted that that's why Nintendo is getting the word out there now, prior to launch. If DVD movie playback is so important, people can wait for the later model next year.

I agree -- it's quite odd that they'd want to actually tell anyone not to buy Wii. And odder still that this is even an issue -- does anybody really want to play DVD movies on Wii? Feels like an unnecessarily confusing announcement that muddies up the message, to me.
