NEC, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba and others formed the WirelessHD special intetrest group to develop a standard for sending video over the unlicensed 60GHz band at multi-gigabit speeds. The technology should have a range of about 30 feet, the group said, and smart antennas should mean you won't have to rearrange the furiniture to achieve a clear line of sight.

The companies expect to incorporate the technology in consumer devices by mid-2007, with HD TV sets and camcorders likely to be the first applications to benefit.

Among other implications, this could mean you won’t need to blow hundreds of bucks on gold-plated cables to connect your new Blu-Ray DVD player to your new monster flat-screen TV.
