Johnny Cash: Law Professor

For some reason, I'm subscribed to a lot of legal blogs, even though the only thing I know for sure about the law is that it's illegal to walk up to a police officer and ask him if he's in the market for a Cambodian child bride, and no legal blog taught me that lesson.

But that's between me and the state. One of the legal blogs I'm for whatever reason subscribed to is Concurring Opinions, who posted up something today asking the question "Was Johnny Cash A Law Professor?"

Of late I have been prepping and researching to the music of Johnny Cash, and I wonder if perhaps his songs were meant as law-exam issue spotters. Here are two examples. First, in the "The Boy Named Sue," Cash tells the story of a man who tried to kill his father for naming him "Sue," a sobriquet that apparently resulted in a life time of torment. Suppose, however, that the boy named Sue, rather than trying to kill his father in a honky-tonk brawl had instituted a law suit. Is there a cause of action for tortious naming?

Unless it has something to do with calling an officer of the law gay when he's not interested in buying a mail order bride, I don't know what tortious naming is, but it's still a pretty great post. Check it out.
