Kofi Annan Warns Biotech Dangers

The Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan warned of the potential dangers of the exponential growth of the world wide biotech industry on Saturday. As the technology to manipulate genes and run unauthorized experiments extends even to small laboratories the potential for harm grows, he said.

“We lack an internationalsystem of safeguards to manage those risks,” he said. “Scientists maydo their best to follow rules for responsible conduct of research. Butefforts to harmonize these rules on a global level are outpaced by thegalloping advance of science itself.”
