Toshiba and Memory-Tech have developed a new type of dual-layer disc that will play
on both HD-DVD and regular DVD players.
The top layer of the disc can hold up to 15 GB of high-definition goodness, while the bottom layer has room for 4.7 GB or regular old DVD content.
The new format doesn’t cost any more to produce than regular HD-DVD discs and could encourage consumers and movie studios to adopt the high-def format, locked in a battle to the death with Sony’s rival Blu-ray.
