On the Existential Horror of Being a Zune

Gizmodo's Jason Chen took his Zune on a socializing trip yesterday to a local airport bustling with Thanksgiving travelers, hoping to find a counterpart to share music with in the wireless ether of the crowd.

After a while we were afraid airport security would stop us and ask us why we were roaming the airport like Dr. Egon Spengler searching for Slimer, so we headed back to our gate. We made sure to keep the player out of our pockets to see if it would generate some interest.

As suggested at Wired's Listening Post, it's going to take a while for critical mass to build, and until then, the life of the Zune will remain filled with loneliness and despair: it's hard to imagine enough Zunes being in one place long enough for meaningful contact outside of, say, schoolyards and college dorms.
