Samsung Electronics has introduced a new series of laptop hard drives that combine perpendicular orientation with free-fall sensors that detect if the drive is about to have a jarring reacquaintance with Mother Earth.
Perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology lays the individual magnetic bits that reside on a hard drive platter on end, where they take up less room and are less prone to errors.
The new Samsung 2.5-inch drives go up to 160GB. And the free-fall sensor gives some reassurance all that data wouldn't be lost if your greasy, scone-stained fingers can't hold on to your laptop on your next Starbucks visit .
