Ps3Sony issued warnings today to avoid "false promotional offers" for the forthcoming PS3, painting grey imports as scams ahead of expected severe shortages of the console in western markets.

"A number of Web sites have been promoting pre-orders on discounted or bulk shipments of the game system -- without the cooperation of Sony, the company stated. Company representatives did not name the sites."

"There are scams, folks, but we can't tell you what they are, so don't buy anywhere unofficial," is the iron cross Sony casts for itself here. Their zero-tolerance policy toward importers is understandable, but one wonders how lumping them in with criminals will help in the long run.

The PlayStation 3 system, at $600 for the decent version, will be on sale from 12-12:04 a.m. on Nov. 17, with more available in 2007.
