Why Your Brain is Full of Static

Researchers at the University of Rochester are using principles of computing to understand out how the brain figures out things when there are neurons firing all over the place. How does it see through all this "noise"?

Apparently, the noise is the point.

Hold tight, you may need a Ph.D. in computer science to figure this out. Here's what the press release says:

"The cortex appears wired at its foundation to run Bayesiancomputations as efficiently as can be possible," says [a study author]. His papersays the uncertainty of the real world is represented by this noise,
and the noise itself is in a format that reduces the resources neededto compute it. Anyone familiar with log tables and slide rules knowsthat while multiplying large numbers is difficult, adding them with logtables is relatively undemanding.

The brain is apparently designed in a similar manner--"coding"
the possibilities it encounters into a format that makes ittremendously easier to compute an answer.

Note that the press release author writes about the brain being "designed." This kind of language sets off creationists who figure that something that was designed needs to have a designer. Is there a better kind of language to use, or is this the best we can do?
