–Vodafone Fined in Greek Wiretapping Case
(15 December 2006)
Vodafone has been fined 76 million Euros (US$99.5 million) for failing to prevent attackers "from subverting a legitimate surveillance system"
and monitoring journalists' and government officials' phone calls during the 2004 Olympic games in Athens. The Ericsson surveillance software was installed on the Greek Vodafone network to allow government agencies to conduct wiretapping. Vodafone says it plans to challenge the fine.
Investigators have not determined who monitored the phone communications.

*Hey, that punishment hardly seems fair. Vodaphone is supposed to be heavier than subversive wiretapping attackers from the intelligence services?
What makes that situation all fineworthy? Vodaphone already lost a security executive who went and hanged himself over this case.
You know how many telco security execs the spooks could bribe for 76 million euros? Gotta be at least
76 of them, which is probably more cellphone security execs than there are in the whole world.
Why don't they go fine the NSA for listening in on European phone calls? They've been doing that every day around the clock for something like sixty solid years. This is silly. This court ought to fined
99 million for attempting to live in Utopia.
