Here's a handy tip: if you're going to have a traumatic head injury, it might not be a bad idea to be buzzed at the time. But don't over do it.
That's the word from a new Canadian study that found moderately intoxicated patients with severe head injuries were more likely to have "better outcomes" than sober people:
Researchers found that those with the highest blood-alcohol levels [.23 or above, which is really, really drunk] were73 per cent more likely to die than those with no alcohol in theirsystems. But those with moderate BAC levels were 24 per cent lesslikely to die than those who had not been drinking.
The lead author suggests that it might not be a bad idea to actually give alcohol to brain-injury patients through an IV because booze is so protective.
Unfortunately, poor Ray Milland there at the right (in "The Lost Weekend") hasn't had the fortune of being distracted from his misery by a head injury.
