Speaking of frissons of mute, overwhelming fear... check out these masterworks of the East German consumer plastics industry. I spend about two hours yesterday wondering if I could find the words to describe what is wrong with these things.
I mean, I'm a design critic, I'm glib, I'm pretty good at that generally....
Post-Communist societies don't shock me, the Wild East is a kind of second spiritual home, really.... Why are these humble works of cheap Sixties plastic so entirely alien? They give one a skin-crawling feeling.
