We Make Money Not Art has posted an impression of the recently opened Kyoto International Manga Museum — a converted elementary school that has been turned into a massive Manga library containing over 200,000 books, over a quarter of which are readable by visitors (including yaoi!)

The museum even has ancient manga:

I am so ignorant that I didn't know Manga existed in Meiji era, i.e., about 100 years ago. The first Japanese Manga-zine is believed to be Eshinbun Nipponchi (published in 1874). Some of the classic Manga styles look pretty cool and they could possibly be reused for designing varieties of modern visual artifacts. In fact the museum is trying to design a model that facilitates such reuse.

Apparently, the museum is doing quite successfully... many visitors seem to have just flopped on their backs and spent the entire day reading stories about cybernetic androgens with big swords.
