Japanese researchers are confident they’ve made a breakthrough in 3D display technology, showing a prototype thin-panel system that displays a 3D image in the air above it.
"This device renders transparent, reflected images. Unlike holography, the device needs no special optical system other than itself and features color image production," said a Kobe University representative.
Right now image selection tops out at a rotating ball, but researchers say creating a realistic image of a human face should just be a matter of concocting a bigger panel.
