Here's a technical innovation you can actually use: Famed lens maker Carl Zeiss Optical
has extended a water-repellent lens coating that resists smudges, fingerprints and assorted goop.
LotuTec gives anti-reflective coated glass a super-smooth surface that repels water and oil, causing liquids to bead and run off the surface or disappear with a single wipe. A simple shake will remove most of the water droplets from a rain-splattered lens, while facial goo comes off without smears.
Zeiss has used the coating on eyeglass lenses for several years and is now applying it to binoculars and other "sports optics." Dare we hope for camera lens filters enhanced with this stuff?
