In the agrarian days before cheap travel, postcards were the primary surrogates for travel for millions of americans. Somewhere along the line, though, small hick towns in the great dust bowl started realizing that by clever photo-manipulation, they could perpetuate a mythology outside of their local area which would encourage gullible suckers to go visit and spend all their summer vacation bucks. Almost all of these depicted impossibly gargantuan food. Unfortunately, most of the innuendo appears to be accidental: "Hey girls! Come to Aredale, Iowa! We've got the world's biggest cucumbers and bananas!"
