Simon Carless and the rest of the Gamasutra crew are at their company's holiday party getting drunk and putting lampshades on their heads and having a Secret Santa or something, so I'm free and clear to link GameSetWatch posts without worrying that they'll see it.

Carless asks if the Universal Media Disc -- the PSP's proprietary disc format, also used for movies and music and stuff like that -- might not be the next 8-Track. That is, about to go out of style and acquire a certain obsolete retro coolness.

He notes that the upcoming UMD release list over at The Digital Bits is a mere four titels long, and all of them coming from Sony. I poked around and didn't see anything to refute this. Will collectors of all things obscure be hunting down rare copies of Beck's Guero (right) on UMD in a few years?
