Tech E Blog's editors offer up five hair-raising home-built projects for your admiration and, yes, horror. These are all reminiscent of those times when a father and child bond over sawdust and breadboard, but it's all really about that obsession that dad's been nursing for years.

There's a Bowling Alley in the garage, a bank-style vacuum elevator in the lounge (pictured), a personal flight simulator, or an entire home modeled on the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

"What started as a hobby quickly became an obsession for Star Trek fan Tony Alleyne. Shortly before splitting from his wife Georgina , Tony replaced their refrigerator with a “warp coil” because he thought other Trekkies would pay for these types of conversions."

Some of these projects cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to complete.
