See, pinned to the church door, the Disputation of Joel Johnson on the Power and Efficacy of iPhones. It's been said before, yes, but here it's said fortissimo: reasons why the iPhone is business as usual for the phone industry, excepting only that Apple has eaten its way into the pie.
Forget about that simple metric and imagine what Apple could accomplish if they weren't bear-baiting the phone market's utter depravity. The old Gods of carrier subsidy and outrageous contracts remain enthroned, for example, even as the deal cut with Cingular can only make a dog's dinner of support and revenue-sharing.
Then there's the silliness of Jobs' claim that allowing users to install their own applications (Like other smartphone operating systems do) will "break" Cingular's network. That last one is delicious — is it just standard PR nonsense, or is it perhaps a subtle gaffe, Jobs quietly revealing he knows next to nothing about the technologies involved?
